I stared out at the mountainous landscape and how I so briefly existed within it. Such was the end of the Appalachian Trail.
“Katahdin, I have to give you my heart now. Keep it hidden in the rocks, somewhere beyond the reach of daily trouble. I’ll return if life allows.”
I walked down the mountain feeling lighter in the most unsettling sense. It turns out a heart weighs a great deal.

How did I get my trail name?
What is your trail name?
Webster.
How did you get it?
I carried a dictionary 500 miles from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Damascus, Virginia.
Why would you do that?
Feeling the impulse to carry a heavy object but struggling with post-college burnout, I had no idea what to read on my thru-hike. A book was too long… so was short story… even a poem sounded unbearable. I was, however, willing to read one word at a time. And the only book that lets you do that is the dictionary.
